Annual Estimated Expenses

Although annual expenses for graduate students vary greatly due to program costs (tuition), funding/scholarship level, and living expenses (e.g., some Chicago neighborhoods are much more expensive to live in than others), the information on this website can serve as a guide as you plan your 2009-10 expenses.

Living Expenses

For the purpose of determining loan eligibility, the University develops an estimate of average living expenses for the nine-month academic year. In 2008-09, this budget estimates that housing, food, books, and personal expenses cost approximately $19,560. International students who need to show resources for twelve months for immigration purposes should note that living expenses for summer 2009 are estimated at an additional $6,520. Students with dependents will need to adjust the estimated expenses. Costs are expected to increase by approximately 5 percent for 2009-10.  This estimated minimum budget may be useful to all students in budget planning. Keep in mind, however, that actual expenses vary according to resources, individual preferences, and dependents.
